Olde Rope Mill Park first opened in 1996 and was a project of the Cherokee Cluster Environmental Group. Friends of the Park then purchased and opened the site as a park and have been managing it ever since. The park wasn’t always as lush and beautiful as it is today. Once home to Cherokee Indian occupancy, the land was seized by the state of Georgia in 1838. It then eventually became a rope mill in 1892. The rope mill was owned and operated by the Benson Rope Company and was used to manufacture rope, wire, and twine. The mill remained in operation until 1950 when it fell into disarray. Today Olde Rope Mill Park contains over four miles of hiking trails, connecting the entire park along a river, wanders up and over hills, and is a perfect way to experience the outdoors. The trails twist through the area, so it is best to bring a map and watch for well-marked signs. The courses are well-marked because of their shared usage by hikers, mountain bikers, and horse riders, but it is essential to watch out for others on the trails. The trails are a great way to get a real glimpse into the nature of Olde Rope Mill Park. The area contains wildlife, including birds, deer, snakes, and turtles.
